Day 35 Chicken Love

Embracing the Slow

When life is going a bit too fast, I head down the chicken coop. I find a clean place to sit and I watch the chickens. I don’t know what it is about them. Yes, they are funny. They crack me up with their funny head movements and how they peck at my Iphone when I am taking their picture. But it is more than that. Chickens are surprisingly peaceful animals. Have you ever seen a chicken take a dust bath? Sweetest thing ever. They settle into the dirt as if it were water and they fluff their feathers and roll all around. This is how they get clean- by getting dirty. (No wonder I love them.)

I never knew I would love chickens but I do. My mom had them as a little girl and they were a special part of her growing up years. When I got my chickens she excitedly told me about gathering the eggs. ” They let you reach in under them and get the eggs when they are in the nesting box”, she said. ” It is so sweet”. I can hear her saying it now. I miss her so. She would love my chickens and the colorful eggs.

Life slows down in a chicken coop. Their soft cooing sounds are so soothing. After two weeks of taking out old floors and putting in new ones, I needed the quiet. The coop is cleaner than my house has been this week!

Grateful for my little chickens tonight. Snowflake, Miss O’Brien, Petunia and Darling. They are all precious.

I love chickens too! My best friend, Jodi, introduced me to chickens and we had a flock of them at our last house. We all miss them now and often talk about living someplace where we can have them again. I have shared several of your posts about chickens with her, and they have ministered to her heart as well as mine.
As I read your post today, I can’t help but think of a song by the same name, which also talks about the joy that chickens can bring, and the message to our hearts that we can find in the delight we get from them. It’s by that same friend, Jodi. You can find it on iTunes, if you search for Jodi Lynn. I believe you would relate to it. Enjoy!
And thank you, for sharing and posting. I love your photos and your thoughts 🙂
