365 Project Day 344: Sterling
Posted on 13. Dec, 2011 by maryanne.
Canon 5D Mark ll, 70-200 2.8 L, 8.0 aperture, 1/160th shutter speed, 100 ISO, Alien B to camera left in large soft box at 1/8 power and one to camera right in a 60″ umbrella at 1/16 power
It is not often that I meet a young man like Sterling. He is a man of character, conviction and great talent, and he is still a senior in high school. He is the owner and operator of Andrew Sterling Photography and has probably shot more weddings than I have during his first year in business. Sterling wrote me on Facebook when I was still in the early stages of my 365 Project and asked if he could call to interview me for a school project. We set up a time to chat and I answered his questions the best I could about my photography business, my favorite things about it and the reasons why I chose it for my career. It was a brief conversation that he now says impacted the way he would run his own business.
” I take it as my place of worship, behind the lens. I love creating memories for other people and share Christ through my work,” he told me today after our session. I was so blessed to be a part of that. I am so deeply honored to be part of the life of someone like Sterling. He loves the Lord Jesus, and is not afraid to tell anyone. In fact, it is his desire that everyone he meets comes to know Christ as well. This is a rarity among most adults, but even more so among young men Sterling’s age. I am so proud to be his friend.
Here are a few more of Sterling. I think he is so aptly named. He shines.
Matthew 5:16~”If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I’m putting you on a light stand. Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven.” (The Message Version)

Carly

I had such a wonderful time photographing Carly Marksberry for her senior photos this week. Carly is an amazing young woman with a big heart. She truly is stunning, inside and out. Her hope is to work with special needs children when she graduates.
We went to Midtown Atlanta for our shoot and found some special locations there. My favorite prop of the day was a red scooter that Freddie Miller from the Jonathan Adler store let us borrow. He walked outside while we were shooting and offered to let us use it. We were pleasantly surprised and jumped at the chance. Thank you, Freddie!
Enjoy some of the magical photos we captured of Carly.

365 Project Day 280: Girls and Horses
Posted on 08. Oct, 2011 by maryanne.
Canon 5D Mark ll, 70-200 2.8L, 200 mm focal length, 3.2 aperture, 1/100 shutter, ISO 100
Some things are just meant to be together. Horses and girls just seem to bring the best out in one another. When Kodi Ricketson asked to have her senior photos taken with a horse, I knew we would have magic. Our sweet mare Jackie was happy to oblige as well.
As long as I can remember, horses have been part of my life. I cannot imagine my life without them, their sweet smell, the sound of their hooves on pavement, their gentle nicker to me when I approach the barn. My heart is tethered to them for always. They are a gift to me from my Father. I was glad to share that joy with beautiful Kodi today. Here are a few more from our time together.

365 Project Day 153: The Last High School Graduation
Posted on 03. Jun, 2011 by maryanne.
Canon 5D Mark ll, 50 1.2L, 2.0 aperture, 1/500 shutter, 100 ISO
Even as I type these words, I cannot believe it. My last child is graduating high school.
When I decided to homeschool my kids 18 years ago, I planned on just taking it one year at a time. At the time, Katie was turning 5, and I could not reconcile in my heart and mind placing her on a bus for someone else to take care of all day long. Chris was working at Gwinnett Place Honda full time, and leading worship part time at a local church. I knew if I sent her to school, she would rarely see her daddy. He got home late at night, and wasn’t home on Saturdays. I had some friends who were home schooling at the time and they encouraged me that it sounded much harder than it really was. So I jumped in. We spent our days coloring and learning to read. I had my babies all around me and we didn’t have to keep the same schedule that the rest of the world kept. I kept them up to see Chris in the evenings and let them sleep later in the mornings. (We are all still on that schedule!)
It has not all been bliss, of course, but it has been incredibly rewarding in so many ways. My kids are all artists, and I do believe home schooling afforded them the time and space to create. They did often wonder if they were as smart as the other kids. I knew better. They are all brilliant! I cannot say that is because of home schooling, though.:) Katie graduated from UGA this past December magna cum laude and Annie is a senior at Oglethorpe University, and will be attending Oxford University for a semester in the fall.
Johnny is a musician, like his daddy. I couldn’t be more proud of him. He is an amazing young man. He is funny, compassionate, and intuitive to the needs of others. He is off-the-chain talented in music and music production. He is taking a semester off to decide where he will attend school while doing some production work at 12 Stone Church. He loves anything having to do with the outdoors including camping and climbing. He is a true adventurer at heart. In a couple weeks, he will be going on a mission trip to Guatemala with 12 Stone. I know it will change his life in amazing ways as he sees how God will use his hands and heart to bless the little ones who need Him so much.
I love this boy/man more that I can possibly express. I am excited to see what God will do through him as he continues to follow after Him. Here are a few more of Johnny’s senior photo session. Had fun with my boy.
Psalm 139:14-16 ~ “You know me inside and out, you know every bone in my body; You know exactly how I was made, bit by bit, how I was sculpted from nothing into something. Like an open book, you watched me grow from conception to birth; all the stages of my life were spread out before you, The days of my life all prepared before I’d even lived one day.” (The Message Version)

365 Project Day 146: Beautiful Kayla
Posted on 27. May, 2011 by maryanne.
Canon 5D Mark ll, 70-200 2.8L, 135 focal length, 8.0 aperture, 1/160 shutter, 100 ISO. Alien B800 in 50in soft box to her right at 1/4 power, Alien B800 to her left in strip bank at 1/8 power.
This is the amazing and lovely Kayla. We were scheduled to do her senior photo shoot today outside in a couple locations. About thirty minutes before she drove up, dark clouds covered the sky. I knew it was a gamble, but I wanted her to come anyway. I thought we could beat the rain and shoot against the moody sky. We tried, but the rain and lightning showed up about 5 minutes into our effort. We decided to do a studio shoot instead.
The shot above is my favorite. It shows her soft, pensive side. Kayla takes light with her everywhere she goes. It just beams from her. She is funny, smart, compassionate, and ridiculously beautiful as you can see here. She was the prom queen this year at Jefferson High. In the fall she will be attending Georgia Tech. A shining star. She is adored by everyone who meets her. This summer she will be traveling to Guatemala to share her light, and the light of the Gospel with the people there. It will be a brighter place there when she leaves.:)
Maybe we can get those outdoor shots soon. I have many more days left in this project! Blessings to you, Kayla.

365 Project Day 124: Sweet Christine
Posted on 05. May, 2011 by maryanne.
Canon 5D Mark ll, 70-200 2.8L, 3.5 aperture, 1/640 shutter, 100 ISO. Reflector used to bounce light back into her face and eyes.
It was such a joy photographing sweet Christine today for her senior photo session. I had to post some of her pictures for my project. Isn’t she stunning? She is so natural in front of the camera and just as beautiful inside as she is outside. She will attend Indiana Wesleyan in the fall. She has a bright and shining future ahead of her. She is sad she will have to leave her electric blue VW Bug (pictured below) at home though, due to the fact that diesel-powered cars don’t do well in the Indiana snow. She loves her Bug. I had one at her age, and loved mine too.
Blessings to you, lovely Christine. God is with you.

Katie and I had such a great time with Maci and her mom Shawnah as we adventured through Nashville for her senior shoot. Maci is a natural glamour girl, so much fun, as you will see in the images below. A beautiful girl in a beautiful city!
I wish you the very best Maci, as you adventure into life. We hope to see you again, very soon.

I so enjoyed getting the opportunity to photograph Jordan’s senior portraits. As you can see here, she is a real beauty! I love how the different colors in the bricks above bring out her lovely eyes. She brought her sweet puppy with her too, and he made her shoot so much fun! Legend has it that she is an amazing singer, although I could not coax her into singing for the shoot. I hope to hear those golden pipes soon!
Blessings Jordan! I loved our time together!

The Many Faces of Rachel
Posted on 01. Nov, 2010 by maryanne.
I cannot tell you what a wonderful time I had shooting Rachel’s senior pictures. She is a gifted theater student and it shows here. I send all my clients a questionnaire to discover who they are before we do their shoot. I learned this from Davina Fear, an amazing photographer I got to spend time with at Love Affair Workshop last year.
Rachel’s questionnaire revealed that she is an avid letter writer, a lover of horses, books, and all things vintage. I wanted to incorporate these things into her shoot. I think we succeeded, as well as adding a bit of flare with my new red crinoline I found a couple weeks ago! Rachel is just a natural, and that is all there is to it. She is beautiful, both inside and out. I was so pleased with what we got. I think you will be too!

Trey’s Senior Session
Posted on 06. Sep, 2010 by maryanne.
I really enjoyed our time with Trey Marksberry, a very handsome and easy to be around young man. He is fun, well rounded, and a complete natural in front of the camera. ( in spite of his protests about not being good at any of this.:)). I think the camera disagrees with you, Trey! See for yourself.
