Day 8 Nurture Wonder

January 9, 2017
Wonder

Wonder

I draw a breath in as I take in the scene on my table. The morning light is clinging to the edges of a tiny cup that I filled with the bluest of blueberries. “Ohh,  look at the light…” I trail off, exhaling slowly. Katie, who is sipping her coffee behind me, giggles softly.  I turn towards her and she smiles. She is teasing me. She knows. Katie also tends to lose herself in wonder over seemingly simple things, so she understands. We love that about each other.

I am still learning to pay attention to the things that make my heart flutter — things like this little cup casting a shadow on an old cutting board. It seems silly to some. In fact, it sometimes seems silly to me. There are times when I would move right on to things that seem more significant. But the truth is, this is important. The simple joys that we find in a single moment are very important. It is like finding another pearl to string. I want every pearl- not just the biggest and the shiniest ones. I want every single one that is to be given to me.

I also desire to honor the heart God gave me. If I do not pause to take joy when my heart is moved, then I am not valuing the unique person God made me to be. It’s okay if others don’t see or love the same things I do. I only have to steward my own heart, and that is more than enough.

So these precious berries in their tiny tea cup? They are exquisite. And the gilding light around edges of the little cup? Divine.

Selah.

I am grateful tonight for the gift of wonder.  Wonder is but a breath away from worship, and worship is but a breath away from God.

Psalm 65:8 ~”The whole earth is filled with awe at your wonders; where morning dawns, where evening fades, you call forth songs of joy.”
