Light Hearts

I love this picture. It is of my daughter Katie and three of her four new roommates. Last month she moved out into her first house with these beautiful and bright women. I couldn’t be happier for her. She has found a community of her own where she can share laughter, good food and her love for God with other women like herself.  As much as I miss her warmth in my home, I am grateful she has taken this step in her life and that she has these beauties alongside her.

Community is something we all require to be happy and fulfilled. It doesn’t matter if you are an introvert or an extravert, we need one another. God set it up that way. We are to be dependent on each other. This means revealing our frailties as well as lending our strengths to well-chosen companions. This has to be cultivated and does not come overnight. Friendships need to be tended to and cared for. I saw a treasured friend today and my heart warmed at the sight of her. She is a light to all who know her. Walking over to her felt like coming home. After a few moments of chatting we tossed the formalities and confessed that we were both dealing with loneliness. Our kids are moving on with their lives and we need friends to fill those spaces.  After a few moments we both concluded that this could be remedied with some appointments on our calendars for us to spend time together.  We know we have to be intentional or it will not happen. She is a blessing in my life and I cannot take her for granted.

A healthy community is one in which we can serve and be served. Our hearts are lightened and the journey is so much sweeter when we travel together.

Call a friend today and put a date on your calendar to see her. I promise I will too.

Proverbs 17:17 ~”A friend loves at all times, and is born, as is a brother, for adversity.”

John 13:34 ~ “Let me give you a new command: Love one another. In the same way I loved you, you love one another. This is how everyone will recognize that you are my disciples—when they see the love you have for each other.”
